Let us all welcome into the Brent family the newest members of the faculty who will be joining us at the start of SY 2019-2020:
Greetings. My name is Jake Roberts. I am excited to teach at Brent International – Baguio. I was born in sunny California in the United States and have lived in various places around the United States. I met my wife Debora at church 12 years ago. I enjoy camping, fishing, reading and movies. I am a huge Star Wars fan.
I have worked in various industries such as environmental and geologic consulting, banking, mobile x-ray, construction, and aviation; this gives me real world experience to share with my students. I have been teaching middle school math for the last three years, here in Alaska. The favorite part of my job is imparting just a bit of my love of mathematics to my students.
Hello! My name is Debora (Deb) Roberts and I can’t wait to join the Brent Baguio team next year. I was born and raised in Seattle, WA. After graduating from high school, I was accepted into the School of Music at Arizona State University where I earned a degree in Music Education. I began my teaching career in Mesa, AZ as a classroom music/band teacher. Over the years, I earned my M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University allowing me to gain my administrative endorsement.
I met my husband, Jake, at church, 12 years ago. Six months after being married, we moved to Alaska so Jake could help his brother with his business. I taught music an additional nine years in Alaska before I earned my classroom certificate through the University of Alaska, Southeast. I began teaching in the classroom in a 1st/2nd grade combo class and this last year taught 5th grade. I have served my school as the PTA liaison, Teacher in Charge, Student Support Team Coordinator, Safety Committee, and many other roles. I’m so happy to be teaching fifth grade next year! I can’t wait to meet you all.
Hello! My name is Laura Johnson and I graduated from the University of Missouri in 2019 with my Bachelors in Secondary Social Studies Education. I also have my certification to teach English and my Multi-Cultural Certificate. I have previously taught abroad for two summers in Bangalore, India. In my spare time I love to read and explore new places, even if it’s in my own backyard! I’m really excited to be Baguio and experience a whole new culture!
Hi! My name is Joji Balcita and I’m excited to teach art to students of Brent International School, Baguio. This is my second year of living here in Baguio City, having decided to relocate from Manila, Philippines because I always wanted to be close to nature and the mountains.
I finished AB Philosophy with a minor Literature from the University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman. I worked as a journalist after graduation but after many years in the field, I felt the need to explore my other interests so I went back to the University to take art courses from UP Diliman, College of Fine Arts. My art studies and continuous practice resulted to a solo exhibit and a participant of group exhibits.
I have worked as a writer for the academe, non-government organizations, and mainstream media covering issues on environment, women, children, gender, and culture. My most recent experience include writing for international social enterprise organizations, and as an online fiction and non-fiction book reviewer. I am also a yoga teacher, having taught in Manila studios, and to students and faculty members of the University for over 15 years. With a varied work background, I believe I have much to share to the young and impressionable students of Brent.
Hello, a proud Brentonian here! After graduating in Brent Baguio, I took Language and Literature at the University of the Philippines Baguio, and continued my studies in Education at University of the Cordilleras. I’ve previously worked as an English teacher, tutor, and writer. I’m thrilled and excited to be back in the Brent classrooms and library, this time as a teacher!
