Dear Brent Community,
It has certainly been an unusual week. Changing government and local advisories meant that we were unable to follow our regular on-campus schedule, but throughout these past few days, our priority has remained the same: to keep our students learning while responding responsibly to the circumstances around us.
While nothing quite replaces having our students and teachers together on campus, this week also gave us an opportunity to put our Flexible Learning Plan into practice, strengthen our systems, and learn where we can continue to improve.
Thank you to our students, parents, faculty, and staff for your patience, flexibility, and continued partnership. We know that changes to the regular school routine can be disruptive, and we greatly appreciate everyone working with us.
Looking Back | August 17–20
Monday, August 17 | Preparing for Flexible Learning
With in-person classes suspended, Monday was used as a faculty preparation and academic responsibilities day. Teachers prepared their Google Classrooms, learning materials, schedules, and online systems so that we could transition into a more structured Flexible Learning Plan beginning the following day. Faculty also continued work connected with our ongoing WASC self-study and accreditation process.
Tuesday–Thursday, August 18–20 | Flexible Learning Plan
Beginning Tuesday, students and teachers transitioned to our Flexible Learning Plan, with synchronous morning classes supported by Google Classroom and asynchronous materials and activities where appropriate.
These first days of implementation have helped us identify what works well and where we can continue refining the experience across different age levels. We particularly thank our students for staying engaged, our parents for helping support learning from home, and our faculty for adjusting lessons and learning activities quickly and thoughtfully.
Throughout the week, school offices and essential campus operations continued. As a boarding school, our boarding program also remained operational, with our residential students continuing to receive supervision, meals, activities, and support on campus.
Campus Safety and Preparedness
We also continued our work on campus safety and emergency preparedness this week, including lockdown and evacuation drills involving faculty and staff. These exercises allow us to test our procedures in realistic conditions, identify areas that need improvement, and continue strengthening our emergency response systems.
As with learning, preparedness is an ongoing process, and every drill gives us useful information about what we can do better.
Recovering Instructional Time | Schedule effective August 24-September 5
Following the disruptions of the past several days, we are also reviewing the best way to recover instructional time while minimizing additional disruption to students and families. We are looking at temporary adjustments such as the use of Homeroom and Office Hour periods for instruction and modest extensions to the regular school day.
Looking Ahead | August 24–September 5
We are certainly looking forward to getting back into the regular rhythm of school life. The coming weeks bring student leadership activities, assemblies, rehearsals, clubs, and several important community dates.

After a rather unconventional beginning to the school year, we are very much looking forward to having our students back on campus and returning to the everyday rhythm of learning, activities, rehearsals, friendships, conversations, and community life that make Brent, Brent.
At the same time, we will continue to remain attentive to weather conditions and official advisories and will make practical adjustments when circumstances require them. As always, we will communicate changes as promptly and clearly as we can.
Thank you again for your understanding, cooperation, and continued support.
Sincerely,
