Dear Brent Families,

As promised in our message this morning, we are sharing more specific guidance on the Brent Flexible Learning Plan so that students and families know what to expect should further suspensions of face-to-face classes occur.

Our goal is simple: to keep learning moving forward while remaining flexible, practical, and mindful of the different circumstances families may experience during weather-related disruptions.

As an immediate step, faculty have been asked to post asynchronous learning materials on Google Classroom today, where appropriate, so that students can begin reconnecting with their classes and continue some learning at their own pace.

These weather-related adjustments are not unique to Baguio. Government directives today also called for alternative learning modes in several areas, including Laguna and Zambales, affecting the areas where our Brent Manila and Brent Subic campuses are located. Brent Subic, for example, announced a gradual early dismissal today in response to the national weather advisory. Each Brent campus considers the government and local guidance applicable to its area alongside its own school circumstances, with student safety and continuity of learning remaining central to its decisions.

For Grades 3–12, students will use a combination of Google Classroom and, when conditions permit, Google Meet. The flexible learning schedule begins with Attendance/Homeroom at 7:45 AM, followed by four learning blocks ending at 12:30 PM. Teachers will provide instructions through students’ Brent accounts and Google Classrooms.

For Grades 3–5, live online interaction will generally be shorter—approximately 20–30 minutes within each block—with teachers remaining available for support during the block. Students will also be provided with hands-on and offline learning activities.

For PreK–Grade 2, learning will primarily be supported through age-appropriate learning packets and teacher guidance. We will keep the approach simple, manageable, and appropriate for our youngest learners.

During Google Meet

When students participate in synchronous Google Meet sessions, we ask them to approach these as they would an in-person class:

  • Cameras should normally be on. Students may keep their cameras off when there is a legitimate connectivity, technical, health, or personal circumstance; they should simply inform their teacher. Teachers may specifically require cameras on for attendance, discussions, presentations, assessments, or other activities where visual participation is important.

  • Students should be properly dressed in their Brent school uniform and ready for learning, just as they would be on campus.

  • Students should be on time, prepared, and respectful throughout the session.

We understand that power and internet connectivity may vary considerably during bad weather. Students who are unable to join a live session may continue their work through Google Classroom or the offline materials provided. Safety and accessibility remain our priority. Attendance will be noted, but difficulties caused by connectivity during weather-related disruptions will not affect Perfect Attendance awards.

Lower School Learning Packets: Beginning Tuesday, August 18, parents may pick up PreK–Grade 5 learning packets from the Lower School drop-off area beginning at 8:00 AM. We will share the confirmed pickup window once finalized. Any packets not collected during the designated period will be made available at the guardhouse afterward. Any other updates will be communicated immediately.

Please also remember that Google Meet links are accessible only through Brent student email accounts for security and privacy. Students are encouraged to stay in touch with their teachers when they need clarification or support. Our Guidance Office also remains available to students who may need additional support.

We know that this is still very early in the school year, and our students have only had a few days together on campus. Moving between in-person and flexible learning will take some adjustment from all of us, particularly as students become familiar with their teachers, schedules, Google Classrooms, and routines.

Thank you for working with us as we put these arrangements in place thoughtfully. We will continue to learn from each day, make adjustments where needed, and keep families informed.

Warm regards,

Dr. Celeste R. Engler
Headmaster
