Dear Brent Community,

Happy United Nations week! ? Starting next week, in homeroom, your child will begin their week(+) long exploration of the 17 Global Goals for sustainable development and the International Year of Creative Economy. Though it is still celebrated virtually, United Nations week continues to provide a meaningful opportunity to come together and celebrate the international organization which promotes social progress, better living standards, climate action, and action toward human rights. Celebrating its 76th year amidst the continuing global health crisis, now more than ever, it is important we come together as stewards of the Earth and promote the importance of the missions and message of the United Nations Organization.

Below is a list of the various events that will take place over the week to celebrate Brent’s cultural diversity, while also participating in activities surrounding the UN Week theme:

Monday, October 18th – Wednesday, October 27th:  Homeroom teachers will help lead a discussion on each homeroom’s assigned Global Goal for Sustainable Development and the UN theme. Want to be part of the conversation? Visit the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development and/or Global Goals Website to continue the exploration at home.

Wednesday, October 20: All-School Chapel (8:00-8:25 am) to join in prayer and celebrate the United Nations and the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development.

Friday, October 22: A cultural celebration of compliments of the National Honour Society will take place in homeroom to honour the cultural diversity within the Brent School Community (video will be released to the school community).

Also on Friday, we will host the traditional United Nations Cultural Dress Up Day with Padlet Photo Competition. Students are strongly encouraged to wear appropriate cultural attire that is respectful of the Brent non-uniform dress code guidelines for the day.

Judging of the best attire will be based on the following criteria:

Creativity

Mix and match accessories and clothes which effectively represents the culture chosen

Effort and Appeal

Photo uploaded to the Padlet and the use of props and accessories effectively impact the overall presentation that is all culturally respectful

Authenticity

Does the outfit look like the real thing?
